International Shipping and Trade

From the beginning of my career I have had a specialist interest in this area. I have acted as adviser and advocate for shipping interests such as  P and I Clubs, ship owners, charterers, port authorities, salvors in a wide range of matters. I have appeared as counsel in  many leading maritime cases in the New Zealand courts. My work has also involved appearing as counsel in courts and in arbitration overseas and before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.

I also give commercial advice on commercial contracts in the shipping area and this included advising in relation to the contractual arrangements which saw the first FPSO constructed, transported and placed on station in New Zealand waters.

I have an active academic interest  in this area and have written the text Maritime Law: Law of Admiralty for the Laws of New Zealand series as well as a chapter on marine pollution in a leading text on environmental law. I believe that my knowledge of the law and experience in its application allows me to provide quick practical advice in an area where such a response is all important.
